Amazon Prime Acquires 58 LGBTQ Titles, Thanks to Outfest

Online streaming just got a whole lot queerer. Thanks to the likes of Netflix, Hulu, and plenty of other streaming platforms, queer content is abundantly available with the click of a mouse. Amazon Prime Video is upping their game with the LGBTQ genres.

The streaming platform has recently begun streaming 58 official-selection feature films from Outfest, the Los Angeles LGBTQ film festival that has showcased and preserved thousands of films since 1982. Some of the titles new to Amazon include GBF, Women Who Kill, Geography Club, Hello Again, Were the World Mine, and the Eating Out films. Six more titles will be added in the coming weeks.

“These are challenging times for many and reports of violence against LGBTQ citizens are on the rise,” Christopher Racster, executive director of Outfest told Variety. “I still believe, though, in the power of our stories to change that narrative It is a relationship like this with Prime Video Direct that will carry our stories across the widest network and reach the most individuals.”

The films are published to Amazon Prime Video Direct’s self-publishing program, allowing content owners to earn royalties based on customer viewing time. In the past year, Amazon has used this system to acquire films from other festivals around the world. Their Film Festival Stars program launched at Sundance Film Festival in 2017, before extending to SXSW, Tribeca, Toronto International Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, and Guadalajara International Film Festival.
