2017 has been a divisive year in the United States. With the constant threat of nuclear war just an impulsive tweet away, racists, homophobes, and misogynist rapists have never felt more empowered. That’s why the smallest acts of defiance are the most important.
One such act was that of Colin Kaepernick, whose kneel during the National Anthem was noted worldwide. Although many jumped to shift the narrative toward a nonexistent disrespect of the troops, his simple act was a symbol of resistance to a system that puts down black people. For those who saw that, it was the symbol of a movement.
Last night, Kaepernick was recognized for his peaceful protest at the Sports Illustrated Sportsperson of the Year ceremony. None other than Beyoncé herself made a surprise appearance to award him the Muhammad Ali Legacy Award.
“Thank you, Colin Kaepernick,” she praised the athlete and activist. “Thank you for your selfless heart and conviction. Thank you for your personal sacrifice. Colin took action with no fear of consequence or repercussion, only hope to change the world for the better, to change perception, to change the way we treat each other, especially people of color. We’re still waiting for the world to catch up.”
