Cardi B’s VMAs Look is Giving Me John Leguizamo in ‘To Wong Foo’ Realness

When you think of iconic Latinx New Yorkers, you probably think of Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, and Chi Chi Rodriguez. No, just me?

At the Monday night MTV Video Music Awards, Cardi B debuted a brand new short hair look that is giving us extreme To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar vibes. If you have never seen that film — shame!

In the film, John Leguizamo plays Chi Chi Rodriguez, a New York City drag queen who goes cross country with Wesley Snipes and Patrick Swayze, eventually (spoiler alert) winning the title of America’s best drag queen.

Cardi B picked up the first VMA of the night for Song of the Summer for “I Like It,” announced during the pre-show. Her appearance at the VMAs is one of her first high profile outings since the birth of her child, Kulture. Since rising to fame last summer, Cardi B has become a queer icon, talking openly about her own dalliances with women and her desire to sleep with Rihanna and Chrissy Teigen. Cardi stole the show at last year’s VMAs by shouting out NFL player Colin Kaepernick while holding her breast.
