Last night, Black celebrities gathered on the red carpet to show off their lavish, bespoke takes on this year’s Met Gala theme: Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.

Black excellence is always a feature of any Met Gala red carpet, but this year’s theme inspired celebs to go above and beyond in their gorgeous takes on Black dandyism. From Doechii’s 70s-inspired, cigar-smoking look to Serena Williams’ quilted train to Jeremy O. Harris’s take on Beau Brummell, Black luminaries brought their best to the Met last night. The legendary stylist and writer André Leon Talley—one of the many inspirations for the Met’s Black dandy theme—once spoke of a famine of beauty. He would have been proud to see all the beauty on display last night.

Obviously we could go on, and on, and on. This year’s theme reinvigorated an event that was, for too long, feeling like an excuse to celebrate the country’s most wealthy and clueless. Last night, Black actors, artists, and musicians took this year’s historically-rich theme of Black male style and absolutely ran with it, transforming the red carpet into a beautiful reminder of Black resilience, history, and excellence.
