Get A Glimpse At Lena Waithe’s First Post-Emmys Win TV Series

· Updated on May 28, 2018

Lena Waithe’s been talking about all of her post-Emmys win projects for months nowthat’s projects, plural, with an sand today we finally have our first real peek at one of them.

Showtime dropped the teaser trailer for The Chi on Wednesday, IndieWire reports. Check it out below.

The clip doesn’t reveal a whole lot of details about the Chicago-set drama, created by the Emmy-winning Master of None star and produced by Academy Award-winning rapper Common among others. But at least we get some super dramatic, close-in shots of characters staring off into the distance all super dramatically while with Raury’s appropriately super dramatic“Devil’s Whisper”soundtracks the whole thing. We’re hooked!

Thankfully, IndieWire’s got us covered with a synopsis: “On Chicago’s south side, an average day finds kids prepping for school as their parents head off to work, young adults trying to make a living, and the elders keeping an eye on things from their front porches. But in this tough neighborhood, real dangers threaten daily to squelch dreams, and the simplest decisions can have life or death consequences.”

The Chi will hit Showtime on January 7 and stars Jacob Latimore, Yolonda Ross, Jason Mitchell, Sonja Sohn, Jahking Guillory, and Alex R. Hibbert, a.k.a., the actor who played young Chiron in the first act of Moonlight. (!!)

For fans of Waithe’s comedy writingyou know, the thing she literally won an Emmy for back in Septembernever fear. She’s hard at work on a way less super dramatic sounding show tentatively titled Twenties “about black girls living in L.A.” She told Out that “the lead happens to be a queer girl,” which when and also now?
