Golden Globes 2017: Sterling K Brown Points Out Importance of Black Representation

· Updated on May 28, 2018

After becoming the firstblack man to ever win Best Lead Actor in a TV drama,Sterling K Brown shouted out the show’s creator, Dan Fogelman, for creating a character written specifically for a black actor.

As #OscarsSoWhite creator April Reign captured on Twitter, Brown said, “This role was written specifically for a Black man. So I am being seen for who I am and I am being appreciated for who I am. And it makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me or dismiss anyone who looks like me.”

Brown’s speech is especially poignant given that the actor was infamously cut off during his Emmys speech in 2017 where he wasfirst black actor to win lead actor in a drama series at that ceremony as well.

Brown’s win also got a lot of love on Twitter.
