Grindr Users Filled Out a 2018 Oscar Ballot — Here’s Who Won

· Updated on May 28, 2018

It’s the Gay Super Bowl! On Sunday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hand out trophies for what it deems the best in film of the year. In anticipation of the event, INTO surveyed Grindr users on their thoughts as to who would take home the gold. Here are the results, with INTO’s picks sprinkled in, as well.

Best Picture

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Call Me By Your Name (33.77%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Get Out
Who Will Win: Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri

No surprise that most of Grindr’s users fell under the spell of the lush, fantastical Call Me By Your Name. And while we’re big fans of the film, there’s no doubt that the Academy’s top honor should go to Get Out, which pulled off the seemingly impossible. It created a funny, terrifying film that is impeccably written and directed with an important, resonant message for our time.

Best Actor

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name (41.34%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Timothee Chalamet, Call Me By Your Name
Who Will Win: Gary Oldman, The Darkest Hour

Let’s get one thing straight. Timothee Chalamet’s performance as Elio in Call Me By Your Name is the best, most nuanced and subtle acting performance of the year. But, Oscars are often about politics, so expect overdue “actors’ actor” Gary Oldman to take home the trophy.

Best Actress

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (32.12%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Margot Robbie, I, Tonya
Who Will Win: Frances McDormand, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

This is a stacked category. If any actress took the category even Streep! we’d have to applaud. However, there’s definitely a malaise surrounding McDormand’s win, given the career-best work of Hawkins and Robbie. Meanwhile, McDormand just seems to be playing a version of herself. Either way, given all the Three Billboards love in the world, and the fact that she’s in almost every shot of the film, expect to hear her name at the podium tonight.

Best Supporting Actor

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (29.06%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Willem Dafoe, The Florida Project
Who Will Win: Sam Rockwell, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Sam Rockwell has the showiest role in Three Billboards. He plays a racist cop who beats up black people but ultimately gets kinda-sorta-not-really redeemed by the end. Though Rockwell has been dominating awards season, Dafoe has our hearts. As the manager of a motel in The Florida Project, he gave a much more muted performance than Rockwell’s, but ultimately packed a deeper punch.

Best Supporting Actress

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Allison Janney, I, Tonya (35.32%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Allison Janney, I, Tonya
Who Will Win: Allison Janney, I, Tonya

Both Laurie Metcalf and Allison Janney are lauded television actress who are pitch perfect in nearly everything they do. That they’ve had to go head to head in this category is almost unfair. Expect Allison Janney to accept an Oscar tonight to add to her mantle of Emmys.

Best Director

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water (36.36%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water
Who Will Win: Guillermo del Toro, The Shape of Water

Increasingly, the best director category is where movies that are huge technical achievements, like Gravity, get their due. That trend should continue with a win for del Toro.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: James Ivory, Call Me By Your Name (60.42%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: James Ivory, Call Me By Your Name
Who Will Win: James Ivory, Call Me By Your Name

This category is great for queer representation. Both James Ivory and Dee Rees identify as queer. But, expect the 89-year-old Call Me By Your Name scribe to take the trophy.

Best Original Screenplay

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Jordan Peele, Get Out (33.07%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Jordan Peele, Get Out
Who Will Win: Jordan Peele, Get Out

Look for the academy to reward Get Out in this category, even though it should win best picture and should have been nominated in far more categories.

Best Animated Feature

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Coco (62.37%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Coco
Who Will Win: Coco

Best Animated Short

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: “Garden Party” (25.68%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: “Garden Party”
Who Will Win: “Dear Basketball”

Best Cinematography

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: The Shape of Water (29.02%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: Mudbound
Who Will Win: Mudbound

Look for the very first woman to be nominated for the cinematography award, Mudbound’s Rachel Morrison, to take home the trophy, as well.

Best Film Editing

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Dunkirk (27.51%)
Who INTO Thinks Should Win: The Shape of Water
Who Will Win: Dunkirk

Best Documentary Feature

Who Grindr Users Think Should Win: Last Men in Aleppo (35.25%)

Who Will Win: Faces Places
