Chappell Roan and Lady Gaga both won big at the Grammy Awards — and we won big by getting to hear their beautiful messages of support for trans folks.
Roan shouted out the trans community on the red carpet, telling GLAAD that she plans to keep standing up for them whenever she can.
“It’s brutal right now, but trans people have always existed and they will forever exist, and they will never, no matter what happens, take trans joy away,” Roan said. “That has to be protected more than anything because I would not be here without trans girls, so just know that pop music is thinking about you and cares about you, and I’m trying my best to really stand up for you in every way I can.”
Culture, unfiltered
Our newsletter will bring you the pulse of queer culture, from the tastemakers to the groundbreakers.
Fans celebrated Roan’s message, saying how wonderful it is to see an outspoken lesbian woman become one of today’s biggest stars. “a lesbian drag queen just won best new artist and used her red [carpet] interview to talk about trans rights,” one fan wrote. “chappell roan the woman that you are!”
Related“More than anything, I would love to go back to Lauren,” the “One of Them Days” star said in a resurfaced interview.Paul Gogarty taught his fellow Irish politicians the lyrics to “Good Luck, Babe!” with this viral speech.
And while Roan used her Best New Artist acceptance speech to advocate for better wages and healthcare for up and coming artists (another very worthy cause!), she did bring an indirect message of support for the trans community to the Grammys mainstage with her performance of “Pink Pony Club.” During the song’s conclusion, Roan’s dancers (who were dressed as rodeo clowns, naturally) raised three massive flags in the colors of the trans flag: pink, blue, and white.
Lady Gaga also spoke to trans people while accepting the award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Die with a Smile.”
“Trans people are not invisible. Trans people deserve love,” Gaga said. “The queer community deserves to be lifted up. Music is love. Thank you.”
During the ceremony, Gaga and Bruno Mars performed a cover of “California Dreamin’” by The Mamas & the Papas. Check out the performance below, along with Roan’s performance of “Pink Pony Club.”
