Kelly Clarkson may be the biggest Chappell Roan stan of them all, and her latest cover proves it.
On Thursday’s episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, Clarkson (who, as of Carrie Underwood’s latest controversy, is unequivocally the greatest American Idol winner of all time) performed a cover of Roan’s “Red Wine Supernova.” Like always, Clarkson’s voice was out of this world, but fans were even more in love with a different aspect of her performance.
Despite not being queer herself (as far as the public knows), Clarkson left the lyrics of “Red Wine Supernova” unchanged, including using she/her pronouns to describe her lover and using “a wand and a rabbit” in the bedroom.

RelatedDidn’t we learn our lesson with Chappell Roan? The singer behind viral hit “F.E.M.M.E.” tells INTO the song’s origin story and why she’s honored to be part of the sapphic pop revolution.
Another singer, Filipino pop star Sarah Geronimo, recently caught flak for performing Roan’s song “Good Luck, Babe!” and changing the lyrics to make a song about compulsory heterosexuality into one about a straight relationship. Clarkson, on the other hand, seems to know the importance of honoring a queer artist’s lyrical intentions.
“Red Wine Supernova” marks the fifth time Clarkson has covered a Roan song on her show, following “Coffee,” “My Kink Is Karma,” “Pink Pony Club,” and a duet of “Good Luck, Babe!” with Miranda Lambert. Clearly, Clarkson is a major fan; it’s only a matter of time before Roan either appears on the show or the two give us a duet in the studio. Matter of fact, why not both? In the meantime, we’re eagerly awaiting Clarkson’s next edition of Kellyoke, where we can only assume that at least one of Roan’s songs will make an appearance.
