Chappell Roan is one of the music industry’s most outspoken stars, from her Grammys speeches on trans rights and healthcare for artists, to her infamous red carpet clapback at the VMAs. Now, Roan’s revealed the source of her confidence.
On the Grammys red carpet, Gayle King told Roan that she admires her confidence, especially for such a young artist, and asked where she thinks that confidence comes from.
“I think because I have walk-away power,” Roan replied. “I know that is kind of controversial for me to say on the Grammy carpet, but I actually think that’s why I’m calm about stuff. It’s like, this is year 11 of being a signed artist, basically, so I’ve been doing this for a long time.”
“Also, I’ve had no money, and I’ve also had a lot of money, so,” she added.

“There is so much grace I’ve grown to have for people that abuse public figures,” Roan said in a new interview.
Roan’s message about walk away power — aka, the power to walk away from a situation, as the name implies — resonated with her fans across social media. “I just think everyone should hear about it,” one fan wrote. “start letting people miss out on you and be okay with that!!!!
King also asked Roan about her wild rise to fame over the past year. “Does your life feel like it’s on a rocket ship right now?” King asked.
“It did last year,” Roan answered. “I was seriously not okay at the end of last year. Like, I was just — my adrenal glands were just shocked. And this year I feel so much better. I think I just really needed a rest, and now, I think that’s why I’m so calm.”
