Doechii’s not just one the fastest rising rappers in the industry today; she’s also a bisexual icon, and she’s not afraid to educate folks on the often misunderstood identity.
On a recent episode of the radio show The Breakfast Club, Doechii was asked what inspired the title of her song “Denial Is A River,” which includes a verse about when her ex-boyfriend cheated on her with a man (“Turns out the girl was really a dude,” she laments on the track.)
Doechii explained that the title comes from the legendary Wendy Williams quote, “Denial is a river in Egypt, your husband is gay!”, which Williams said to a caller seeking advice on her short-lived reality show The Wendy Williams Experience. (The clip is well worth a watch if it’s been a minute.)

When one of The Breakfast Club’s hosts, Charlamagne tha God, asked Doechii what it was like to learn her boyfriend was cheating on her with another man, she made it clear that his sexuality wasn’t an issue.
“It’s not shocking,” Doechii said. “That was never the problem. I think the problem was that you cheated on me. You also could’ve let me know up front, you know, what your style was.”
“I’m bisexual,” she continued. “That’s cool. I’ve dated bisexual men; no problem. Let me know what it is up front. I’ll accept you for who you are. It doesn’t really matter. I think it’s like, cheating on top of lying and secrecy about just who you are as a person.”
“How can I be bisexual and then I’m gonna not date somebody else who’s bisexual?” she added. “Why, because he’s a man? Who cares?”
Another host pointed out that some people see bisexuality as okay for women, but not okay for men, which Doechii said couldn’t be further from the truth.
“I don’t see it that way. I really don’t,” she replied. “I think that sexuality is fluid, and I really don’t give a damn.”
A clip of the moment went viral on TikTok, where fans in the comments thanked Doechii for bringing up such an important topic.
“Everything is a social construct!” one commenter wrote. “proud and happy she is outspoken and living true to herself!”
“I’m glad she moved the goal post,” commented another. “we need to stop this narrative that [cheating is] worse if it’s the same sex IDGAF who it’s with.”
Related“People’s sexuality, or whatever they desire, is as individual as a fingerprint,” the “Queer” star said in a new interview.
Luckily, Doechii’s relationship woes have a happy ending: she now has a girlfriend, and she described her relationship as “wonderful.”
When Charlamagne abruptly asked, “Does she trust you?” — apparently leaning into the biphobic stereotype that bi folks are untrustworthy — Doechii handled the situation with class and humor.
“Oh my god. Damn! Yeah, I would hope so!” she said, laughing. Fans also praised her tact in the comments while dragging the hosts for their ignorance: “the ‘does she trust you’ pissed me off so bad how dare u,” one commenter wrote.
“the ‘does she trust you?’ cause she’s bisexual 🙄 men smh,” echoed another.
“she handled their weird approach so well,” added a third.
“Denial Is A River” is part of Doechii’s Grammy-nominated mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, streaming on all music platforms. Check out her performance of a medley of “Denial is a River” and “Boiled Peanuts” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert below.
