Jamie Lee Curtis shares powerful call to fight for the queer community

Jamie Lee Curtis, vocal advocate of the LGBTQ+ community in general and her trans daughter in particular, continues to be the mother many of us wish we had. And after Tuesday’s election results, we could all use some motherly wisdom.

Posting to Instagram, the Academy Award-winning actress called on those upset by Trump’s victory to turn their energy toward supporting and protecting the LGBTQ+ community.

“So the results are in,” Curtis began. “Many will be celebrating, possibly even gloating over their victory. Many will be stunned and sad with the terrible feelings of the loss. That is the same result despite who wins because that’s what America and democracy looks like. Has always looked like.”

Curtis painted a grim portrait of the future. But there’s one important silver lining—she is going to focus her efforts on helping the vulnerable communities threatened by a second Trump term.

“So what does it mean?” she continued. “It means a sure return to a more restrictive, some fear draconian time. Many fear their rights will be impeded and denied. Many, minority groups and young people will be afraid. Gay and trans people will be more afraid. We know that many women will now find it difficult to get the reproductive healthcare that they need and deserve.

“For all those people there will be those who will help you. Me included.”

More than help, Curtis called on her followers to fight. “But what it really means is that we wake up and fight,” she said. “Fight for women and our children and their futures and fight against tyranny, one day at a time. One fight at a time. One protest at a time. That’s what it means to be an American. That’s what it has always meant and will always mean regardless of the outcome.

“Be gentle with people today,” she concluded. “Be gentle with yourself today. Feel your feelings today but most of all…..Be an American today.”

Curtis is no stranger to the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Beyond officiating her daughter’s wedding, she has repeatedly used her platform to model what supportive parenting looks like. “People have said, ‘You’re so great to accept her!’ I was like, ‘What are you talking about?’,” Curtis said last year on MSNBC.

“This is my daughter. This human being has come to me and said, ‘This is who I am.’ And my job is to say, ‘Welcome home.’ I will fight and defend her right to exist to anyone who claims that she doesn’t.”
