Lil Nas X’s new track is reminding the gays of something

Lil Nas X performs at Bonnaroo in Manchester, Tenn., Saturday, June 17, 2023.

Brace yourselves for hot boy summer: new music from Lil Nas X is coming. After the groundbreaking release of his first full album, 2021’s Montero, X is back with new tracks and a hot pink aesthetic to follow up his “J CHRIST” era. The people are ready, but are the people prepared?

After changing his TikTok screen name to “dreamboy.”, X released a series of videos featuring music from what we can only assume is his dreamy new era. And fans instantly noticed something about the singer’s style…

“I hear André 3000!” one commenter wrote. And yes, Nas’s opening rap to “dreamboy” does indeed harken back to the golden days of Outkast. “OUTKAST VIIBBBEESSS”, someone else wrote, while another simply stated: “i can hear mr 3k in this ooo.”

It’s true—while we haven’t heard from André 3000 musically since 2023, when he released his hiatus-breaking jazz album New Blue Sun, his chokehold on the culture remains strong.

“He’s just from ATL guys,” wrote another commenter. Like many iconic rappers including André 3000 and Big Boi, Lil Nas X does indeed hail from Atlanta and it’s quite clear from the new track that he’s tapping into his rap roots.

“Daaaaamn. Lil Nas has been able to serve so many different styles while so many give you one flavor. Yes, absolutely hear Andre 3000, but it’s with Nas’s seasoning. POP TF OFF, DREAMBOY,” someone else wrote.

Precisely: we’ve been holding out for a hero, and this is the perfect time for Lil Nas X to return to us with life-saving new music. It’s like he knew we needed this.
