In the ongoing anti-trans crusade waged by the right wing, it’s now no longer enough to force children to use the wrong school bathroom and deny participation in team sports. Now, in Montana, a new bill threatens supportive parents of trans children with jail time and a criminal record.
RelatedFellas, is it gay to have a job?
SB 164 in Montana, a revision of the “Offense of Endangering the Welfare of Children” bill, seeks to subject parents helping their children transition to up to 10 years of jail time and a fine of up to $25,000.
The purpose of the bill is clear: to scare parents out of helping their children access gender-affirming care.

As reported by Erin Reed, the bill would even apply to non-residents of the state who are passing through on a visit.
Major alert: Montana may be about to pass a major anti-trans bill that charges parents with felony endangerment of a child if their child is on trans youth care. It would apply to parents just passing through the state, visiting. Would be the first law of its kind to pass anywhere. Vote is TODAY.

Montana is following Texas’s lead in trying to classify supportive parents of trans children as enemies of the state. If passed, this bill could set a dangerous precedent for trans citizens in red states across the country.
That said, all hope is not lost. Last week, a Montana judge temporarily struck down an aggressive anti-trans bathroom bill. Last fall, a ban on gender-affirming care in the state was also struck down. We’re holding out hope that SB 164 gets the same treatment.
