OMFG Astrid: This trans musician puts the hype in hyperpop

It’s pretty safe to say that Hyperpop is an extremely trans genre of music. A common proponent of hyperpop music—which owes its 2019 resurgence to trans artists like Laura Les of 100 gecs and the late SOPHIE—is its use of voice modulation, which allows for wide experimentation with gender presentation and dealing with gender dysphoria.

Combined with the influence of Gen Z internet culture within the music genre, hyperpop often creates an ironic, almost self-satirizing take on pop music combined with a postmodern counter-culture scene that doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s a world where musicians can seamlessly go from singing about unaliving billionaires to rapping about being in a puppygirl polycule in Portland, Oregon.

OMFG, Astrid, or simply Astrid, is a musician who captures that fun energy of hyperpop, combining dance party vibes with commentary on the transfem experience.

Her latest release, Crash, is no exception, partnering with two other trans musicians, FEM&M and Charloux, this single is a real banger.

This beat is giving a night out on the town clubbing with the dolls. Overall it’s a feel-good song—something we’re desperately in need of right now—and the chemistry between all three artists collaborating on this song can be felt.

For trans people, the world is full of a lot of pain right now, and to have music that uplifts and reminds us of the good times is important now more than ever.

Astrid also made an entire album about being a doggirl. I have this track from it as my ringtone, fyi.
