A craft fair themed around the queer pirate dramedy Our Flag Means Death was recently organized by two passionate supporters of the trans rights movement. All proceeds went toward the Campaign for Southern Equality’s Trans Youth Emergency Project, an initiative offering critical financial and logistical aid to families of trans youth, providing them with emergency grants and access to necessary healthcare services.
The organizer’s initial goal was to raise $50,000 for the project, but this goal was surpassed in less than 11 minutes, ultimately raising $105,000 by the end of the auction.

David Jenkins, the creator of Our Flag Means Death, contributed to the cause by offering several rare items for auction, including the Act of Grace prop featuring doodles by Taika Waititi. It sold for $15,300. Jenkins also donated a promotional teapot that sold for over $6,400.

This immediately gained notice from fans of the show who are just as passionate about LGBTQ+ rights as they are about swashbuckling. Donations poured in, and Etsy shop creators would contribute to the auction with their OFMD-themed crafts.
Decided to re-do my craft fair contribution to make my next pattern 💜

Though the series was sadly canceled by Max, it still has a very dedicated following of fans who praise the series’ depiction of queerness in a medium that has historically underrepresented minority groups. It would come as no surprise that fans would come together to support a cause that helps transgender youth and their families. While the show was forced to end after its second season, Jenkins holds out hope that the series will return. In an interview with TVInsider, he states that he would “never rule out a return to this show”.
I would further like to comment that this country claims to stand for liberty and fairness for all, but at the same time, charity organizations are needed to protect people from their government. A government is supposed to provide safety and help its citizens; it is for that reason I feel as though we must ask what the principles of our nation truly are.
