The ‘Golden Girls’ Team is Developing a Gay Senior Citizen Comedy

· Updated on May 28, 2018

Two of the writers and producers behind Golden Girls are developing a new, modernized series with Super Deluxeand it’s gay as hell.

According to Variety, Silver Foxes follows “two older gay men and one twink (their buddy’s young lover) that rescue a friend who’s been forced-back-in-the-closet at his homophobic assisted living facility.” Post-rescue, they return with their escapee to their Palm Springs house and create “a fabulous family of friends.”

Besides Golden Girls, Silver Foxes creators Stan Zimmerman and James Berg have also worked on Roseanne and Gilmore Girls, as well as creating the Lifetime show Rita Rocks in 2008. The comedy duo says they were inspired to make Silver Foxes after watching the 2011 documentary Gen Silent, which follows LGBTQ senior citizens grappling with discrimination in nursing homes. This continues to be an issue for many aging queer and trans people.

It’s good to see gay creators being given a platform to make gay contentand for Zimmerman and Berg, this show sounds like it’s been a long time coming. Plus, is there anything truly gayer than a comedy about gay men living in Palm Springs?

No cast has been announced as of yet, but last year, the creators helda table reading with actors George Takei, Leslie Jordan, Bruce Vilanch, Todd Sherry, Melissa Peterman, Daniele Gaither, and Cheri Oteri.
