Chris Kluwe, a former NFL player and the first-ever punter to earn a place in the Hall of Fame, stood up for trans rights in no uncertain terms last night. At a Huntington Beach City Council meeting, Kluwe took the stand to denounce the MAGA movement for everything it is: hateful, fascist, and an enemy of American progress.

Kluwe was giving voice to everything trans folks and allies have been thinking, feeling, and saying for years in regards to the present (and past) administration. But instead of being celebrated for his honesty, he was cited for civil disobedience.

This is how to be an ally to the trans community. Also, this isn't just an ex NFL player, he's the first punter ever inducted into the hall of fame.

“MAGA stands for trying to erase trans people from existence,” Kluwe began, “MAGA stands for resegregation and racism. MAGA stands for book bans.”

Kluwe continued listing off the many human rights violations the MAGA administration is responsible for, in a cool, calm and controlled manner. Announcing his intention to perform an act of civil disobedience, Kluwe then approached the dais before being restrained and carried out by police officers.

While councilmembers told the LA Times that it was “scary” to see Kluwe approach them (lol), the reality is that Kluwe did nothing but say what everyone with good sense is thinking right now. So of course he got arrested for it. Fans and supporters rallied around Kluwe and sent words of encouragement on social media. Last night, Kluwe responded to the outpouring of support on Bluesky.

I appreciate everyone’s messages of support, I’m trying to get through all my mentions but as you can imagine, it’s been a bit of a busy day 🙂 Remember – peaceful civil disobedience, and no kings, no tyrants. Not ever.

“No Kings, no tyrants, not ever.” Let’s make those words to live by.
