As the election draws ever closer, campaign rallies become more and more pressing. But according to the New York Times, Trump’s rallies aren’t quite as successful as he would like.
At the Dorton Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, the seating behind the stage had dozens of empty seats, with the back of the arena having several empty rows and there being no line outside. This is in spite of boasts from Trump about how large the crowds he draws are, with insistence that thousands wait outside.
At an arena in Greensboro, North Carolina, many sections were completely empty, a trend also seen in Fiserv Forum in Milwaukee. Vice President Kamala Harris, meanwhile, filled up the Greensboro stadium.
Additionally, Trump has been arriving late to rallies, causing them to run later than expected, and has gone on increasingly long-winded speeches. This prompted Harris to attack Trump by saying, “People start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom.”

This was borne out in Kinston, North Carolina when, five minutes after Trump’s speech, audience members steadily started trickling out. Even the crowd at his infamous Madison Square Garden rally didn’t stick around to see the end of his speech. This happened, too, at the Penn State campus in State College, PA.
We’ve seen him lie about crowd sizes before—notably at his inauguration in early 2021–but Trump’s reluctance to face facts feels particularly desperate right about now.
