Trump’s pick for civil rights post has a horrifying anti-civil rights history

Keeping in the recent tradition of appointing the most morally bankrupt individuals available to his 2025 cabinet, Trump has nominated Tucker Carlson’s lawyer (and Trump’s personal lawyer) Harmeet K. Dhillon for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights. The only problem? She seems to have a rather imperfect understanding of what civil rights are.

Some context: Dhillon has, in the past, spread racist misinformation about India sending “death squads” to the US and Canada and filed several suits against California concerning the state’s stay-at-home order during the peak of the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

She also represented detransitioner Chloe Cole in a suit filed against Kaiser Permanente.

This is Chloe Cole and Tucker Carlson's lawyer. She's a radical extremist that will turn DOJ into an organ for revenge against political enemies, including entire minority groups like trans folks.

Basically, it’s not looking good for folks who believe in science and support trans rights. But it wasn’t looking good for us to begin with.

Trump has nominated Harmeet Dhillon, an aggressively anti-trans pick, for assistant AG for civil rights. She has already gone after transgender refugee laws in safe states.

Dhillon is also a member of the Federalist Society, a libertarian organization committed to reinterpreting the constitution in increasingly bizarre ways.

Donald Trump has nominated Harmeet Dhillon as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights at the U.S. Department of Justice. Of course she's a member of the Federalist Society. SMH.

Dhillon also allegedly has been defending certain local factions of the anti-gay, anti-trans group Moms for Liberty free of charge.

In general, Dhillon is a predictable pick for a party that’s been anti-trans, anti-gay, and anti-voters rights from the start.

NEW: Trump named Harmeet Dhillon as his choice to head up the Civil Rights division of the DOJ, an important part of the federal government charged with protecting voting rights. Learn more about Dhillion’s connections to Trump and anti-democratic groups.

No surprise there, of course, but for trans folks facing an already terrifying and uncertain legal future in this country, it’s terrifying news.
