Looks like a remake of American Psycho isn’t happening after all—at least, so says the book’s author, Bret Easton Ellis.
The project, rumored to star Austin Butler and to be directed by Luca Guadagnino, does not appear to be actually happening, since neither are contracted.
“I have a feeling it’s fake news,” Ellis said on his podcast in late December. “I heard somewhere, from someone, that there are no contracts. Austin Butler hasn’t signed anything to play Patrick Bateman. Luca doesn’t have a deal. Scott Burns, who is supposed to write the screenplay, doesn’t have a deal.”
He continued, stating: “From various sources that I have, this is just fake news that was put out there to see how an audience is going to react.”

The original film, released in 2000, follows banker and serial killer Patrick Bateman – played by Christian Bale – giving into his urges to kill, while also satirizing consumerism and capitalism.
