Charli xcx settled TikTok’s viral debate over her song “party 4 u”

Charli xcx has one message for the fans analyzing her song “party 4 u”: They’ve got it all wrong.

Though the track from Charli’s 2020 album how i’m feeling now flew under the radar upon release, it’s since become a certified classic (helped by that iconic needle drop in lesbian fight club comedy Bottoms). Now, “party 4 u” is trending once again as TikTok users provide their hot takes on exactly what experience the song captures.

In “party 4 u,” Charli sings about throwing a party only in the hopes that one specific person — an ex-lover, perhaps — will show up so they can reconnect. It’s very Great Gatsby coded. On the dreamy, synth-heavy bridge, Charli croons the phrase “party on you” over and over. Is it a wish? A promise? A mantra? The internet can’t seem to agree.

Fan interpretations of the song are wide-ranging. Some think it’s about the moment you see an old flame, years after breaking this off. One viral TikTok featuring “party 4 u” compiled some of film and TV’s most iconic scenes around that idea, from Normal People to La La Land to Portrait of a Lady on Fire. “This sounds EXACTLY like when you realize they will never again be the person you first met and there’s nothing you can do about it,” wrote another user with a similar take.

Others made sure to keep their interpretations firmly planted in party culture. “This song is crying in the club. it’s seeing the person u like kiss [someone] else. it’s the uber home alone,” wrote one creator.

Still others had more upbeat interpretations, like the teenage nostalgia of getting liquor by any means necessary.

But after seeing so many of her fans speculating, Charli herself stepped in to set the record straight with a TikTok of her own.

“This is actually the moment you realize that that one person isn’t ever coming to your party so you stand in the middle of the room, tears briefly fill your eyes but then you wipe them away, pretend you’re ok and proceed to get unbelievably fckd up and then spend the next week feeling completely ashamed of yourself xx,” she explained.

There you have it, straight from the icon herself. As one commenter on Charli’s video put it, “everyone quiet she has spoken.”

“I read this and thought ‘this is the best take so far,’” another commenter wrote. “And then realized who it was.”

“Thank you because others were annoying me,” echoed a third. “This isn’t a happy song.”
