Last week, Ethel Cain put out a much-anticipated vinyl release of Preacher’s Daughter. The album was a critical success immediately, but failed to hit the charts at the time of its release. Over the years, the album, along with Cain herself, have amassed a cult following. One could only imagine how ravenous her fans would be to get their hands on the newly-pressed vinyl.

When the vinyl came out last week, it sold a whopping 37,000 copies between April 4th and 10th; this surge in sales caused Preacher’s Daughter to score the number one spot on Billboard’s Top Album sales chart, making Ethel Cain the first transgender artist to score number one on the prestigious list.
This event is not only monumental for Cain, but for the entire trans community. For years, we’ve been trying to receive recognition and validation in mainstream culture, and to have Cain reach this level of success makes us feel seen. It also inspires other trans people in the music industry to believe they can achieve success despite who they are, and despite what those in power want you to believe right now.
For Ethel Cain’s next endeavor, she announced a follow-up album to Preacher’s Daughter entitled Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You. The forthcoming album is the intended second installment to a trilogy of albums kickstarted by Preacher’s Daughter. The narrative of Willoughby Tucker is speculated to follow the perspective of the preacher’s wife character laid out by the first album, and serve as a prequel to Preacher’s Daughter.
Along with the release of the album, she will also launch a music tour to promote the album starting on August 12th, with the first concert taking place in Seattle, Washington.
