JoJo Siwa teases her first adult-oriented pop banger and the internet is divided

In case you’d forgotten, JoJo Siwa is all grown-up now and her first new music release in some time is emphasizing the fact.

Siwa shot to fame on the shows Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition and Dance Moms in the mid-2010s. She then became a huge YouTube star and began to release music, leading to big concert tours across the US.

She came out as queer in 2021.

Siwa’s last single was “Nonstop” in 2020. The video shows her very much in her pre-out era.

Over the last few days, Siwa has been teasing fans with the news of her new single, entitled “Karma”. It was pretty clear it would showcase an image change for Siwa and be a little more adult. Postings last week warned viewers what to expect.

Yesterday, Siwa dropped the first major snippet of “Karma”, and it’s all about being a “bad girl”, and someone cheating in a relationship. An accompanying video has her gyrating in glittery, silver hotpants.

“Karma’s a b*tch, I should have known better, if I had a wish I would have never f*cked around. When I saw the pics of you and her I felt the knife twist. Karma’s a b*tch … and she’s with you right now.”

The video has provoked a huge reaction online. Many fans are welcoming the new era and say “Karma” sounds like a bop.

“I love it @itsjojosiwa , if people don’t then they don’t have to listen!” was one comment on Instagram.

“OMG!!! I love this song!! It’s as perfect as you baby, congratulations My love ❤️🔥👏” was another.

However, many others expressed horror or disappointment. Some cruelly suggested Siwa is trying to reinvent herself as Taylor Swift.

“Girl looks like she’s being styled by a capital citizen from the Hunger Games 😭” was another Instagram comment.

In fact, the clips and Instagram postings have prompted hundreds of negative comments. Can an artist not just experiment with their sound and image anymore?

Thankfully, the negativity prompted more people to come to Siwa’s defense.

“The fact that everyone’s crying in the comments about ‘bring back old JoJo’ … NEW JoJo is here and I AM HERE FOR IT LFGGGGGG 🔥🔥🔥🔥” said one fan.

Another agreed, saying, “Insane that there are so many miserable people in the comments of someone simply doing something they love. I’ve never seen anyone have so much hate on what is a standard form of hype for a new release!! Makes me kinda excited to see what’s cooking 🔥”

It’s not clear when the full version of “Karma” will drop but we imagine, given how Siwa has hyped it up over the last fortnight, it’s due imminently.
