Trump’s anti-trans prison order was just officially struck down

Last week, Trump signed an executive order intended to forcibly detransition incarcerated trans women and remove them from women’s prisons to men’s prisons, where they would be subject to repeated sexual assault, abuse, and solitary confinement. Today, a federal judge has rightfully struck down the order, deeming it a textbook definition of cruel and unusual punishment.

During a two-week period where there have been no breaks from the onslaught of aggressive anti-trans legislation, this is a huge win and a reminder that some civil servants are still committed to prioritizing humanity over authoritarianism.

After trans journalist Ari Drennen reported on the decision last night, trans folks on social media collectively jumped for joy.

Obviously we have a lot more fighting to do, but this is a major victory in a period of relentless bad news.

The news might be bad and overwhelming, but we can’t forget we have allies in unexpected places.
