Colorado Rep. Lauren Boebert has been widely mocked for an X post to mark Martin Luther King (MLK) Day yesterday.
Boebert, a hardline MAGA Republican, felt it was the perfect time to educate the internet on the true meaning of MLK’s teachings and his famous “I have a dream” speech.
“Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream that we would all be equal in America,”Boebert said. “Equity had no part of that dream. It was about equality. Let’s end the woke movement in America in honor of MLK Jr.”

Equity had no part of that dream.
It was about equality.
Let’s end the woke movement in America in honor of MLK Jr.
Equality means each individual or group of people is provided with the same resources or opportunities. Equity, on the other hand, recognizes that each person has different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach an equal outcome.
A cartoon posted in response to Boebert’s message pretty much sums up the concept.
Pretty sure MLK dreamed about the everyone being treated equally aka be seen as deserving to see over the fence. pic.twitter.com/nRgC8m8rBV

Boebert’s tweet prompted a storm of criticism.
Equity means to treat people with fair and impartial treatment, so what is your problem with that?

You stand for nothing Dr. King stood for. His family doesn't support Maga. Shut up.

You are why Bernice King tells white people to keep her father’s name out of their mouths, Granny Bobo

I really don’t think someone could post a more ignorant, insensitive, asinine comment than this, but since it is MLK Day I’m sure the GOP members will give it a whirl. https://t.co/6N9VkkX0BY

In the grand tapestry of understanding, your expertise on matters related to MLK is as elusive as finding penguins in the Sahara desert, Lauren.

Boebert’s anti-woke crusade
Boebert currently represents Colorado’s 3rd District. However, she only narrowly won re-election in 2022. She recently announced she was switching to represent the far safer 4th District in 2024, replacing the retiring GOP lawmaker Ken Buck.
Boebert has made a name for herself with her consistently anti-woke stance and praise for Donald Trump. She has consistently voted against LGBTQ+ legislation. She previously stated her opposition to same-sex marriage on her website, saying “I oppose efforts to redefine marriage as anything other than the union of one man and one woman.”
Boebert has consistently opposed gender-affirming care for transgender people, and mis-gendered notable trans figures, such as Dr. Rachel Levine. She has also mocked people’s use of pronouns, declaring on X, “I identify as non-Bidenary” and “My pronoun is ‘Patriot.’”
She has previously blasted the proposed Equality Act as “disgusting,” concerned more with the “supremacy of gays and lesbians and transvestites” than protecting people from discrimination.
Last year, she blasted President Biden’s attempts to scrap millions of dollars of student debt. She told Sean Hannity on Fox, “He’s the one who is robbing hardworking Americans to pay for Karen’s daughter’s degree in lesbian dance theory.”
In short, she has given zero indication she supports equality, let alone equity.
