On Tuesday, one brave and voracious woman stood up for humanity. Bishop Mariann E. Budde of St. John’s Episcopal Church pleaded for Trump to have mercy on the LGBTQ+ community and immigrants during the inaugural prayer service sermon.
“In the name of our god, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” Budde stated in a hopeful tone.
She continued listing the importance of unity and the family structure he would be disrupting for queer children living in the age of anti-gay and anti-trans legislation. And she left no stone unturned, mentioning that immigrants’ hard work is the backbone of America.

Trump and JD Vance didn’t look too pleased as she spoke further with their wavering eye contact and puckered lips. If his body language wasn’t enough confirmation, he proclaimed on Wednesday to his social media platform, Truth Social, that Bishop Mariann E. Budde “brought her church into the world of politics in a very ungracious way.” He continued, saying: “She was nasty in tone.” He even demanded an apology from Budde.
However, the bishop isn’t shy of controversy as she embraced the overwhelmingly positive and negative comments from all sides of the spectrum. In a recent interview with Time, she stated, “I am not going to apologize for asking for mercy for others.”
