For a group claiming to be all about “women’s rights,” TERFs don’t seem to care much about the lived experiences of actual women.
No, they’d rather fire off insults at trans people online. Take an innocent question from a trans woman that recently caught the attention of online TERFs. On the subreddit r/AskTransgender, a user turned to her fellow trans folks for advice.
“Any clothing brands specifically for trans women?” she asked. “Most of the dresses that look good to me are made for people with much narrower shoulders and shorter arms than me and it makes me feel incredibly sh*tty when I try and fail to put them on. Are there any brands you know of that make dresses with different proportions?”
That’s when a user named HC stepped in to … defend women’s rights? By making fun of that user’s post? “Transwoman is furious after learning that dresses are made for ‘people’ with narrower shoulders and shorter arms 🥴🥴🥴,” she wrote alongside a screenshot of that Reddit post. HC’s post garnered more than 6 million views, with plenty of other TERFs in the comments echoing her anti-trans rhetoric.

Where to even begin with HC’s statement? First, the original poster hardly seemed “furious”; rather, she was earnestly asking a very understandable question.
It’s so understandable, in fact, that plenty of cis women shared their own experiences with not fitting into mass-produced clothes. In attempting to exclude trans women and ridicule their bodies, people like HC end up bringing down all women in the process. “Remember when feminists knew that womens clothing sizes were deliberately made to promote unrealistic body expectations, that don’t represent the majority of women, making it a nightmare to just buy clothes, if you’re not a model?” reads one viral response to HC’s post. “terfs really ruined feminism.”
Then there’s the fact that the original post, which has since been deleted from the AskTransgender subreddit, was posted two years ago. How did HC even come across the post in the first place? Is she lurking in queer online spaces just to find things to be mad about? Honestly, we wouldn’t be surprised.
