Donald Trump has never been the cleverest when it comes to his insults, but his latest attempt at a dig on Pete Buttigieg was actually … *checks notes* a lovely compliment? Yes, a lovely compliment.
On Thursday, Trump was rambling to reporters about his first administration’s plans to revamp air traffic control systems, claiming that Joe Biden’s team, including then-Secretary of Transportation Buttigieg, got in the way.
“When they took over, Buttigieg, who has no clue,” Trump began, before apparently getting distracted by a pleasant memory.
“You know, he drives to work on his bicycle with his — in all fairness — with his husband on the back, which is a nice, loving relationship,” Trump added.

From there, Trump seemingly remembered he was supposed to be dragging Buttigieg, not complimenting his marriage. He threw in a jab at Rep. Jasmine Crockett — one of his fiercest critics, who just gave a masterclass on dragging conservatives herself in the House — for good measure.
“But he didn’t have a clue. This guy? He didn’t have a clue. And he’s actually a contender for president? Between him and Crockett, you can have that party,” Trump concluded. Ooh, sick burn.
Trump’s statement is bizarre for a number of reasons. For one, there’s no evidence that Buttigieg and his husband Chasten have ever ridden a bicycle together, let alone to the White House while Buttigieg worked there. Might Trump have been thinking of another famous gay couple, Frog and Toad?
While some folks across the internet quickly made that comparison, others lamented the fact that Trump is so unintentionally funny. If only he’d chosen a career in comedy instead of in politics, maybe we’d have been saved from two terms of evil incarnate ruling the country.
