As American women prepare to head to the polls following the repeal of Roe v Wade—the biggest reversal of women’s rights in modern memory—the Republican Party continues to fill its ticket with misogynistic clowns. A recently resurfaced clip now shows Mark Robinson, the GOP nominee for North Carolina governor, ridiculing contraceptives and sex education while commanding abstinence for all women.
The video, uncovered by Huffington Post, shows a 2022 speech the Lt Governor gave to Hilltop Baptist Church in Thomasville, North Carolina. Robinson repeatedly mocks the very concept of birth control, telling women everywhere, “Get this under control,” and waving his hand around his crotch.
“Particularly we love to tell our young women that. We want to empower you,” he said. “We want to help you to build up your mind so you can be empowered.”

“Why don’t you use some of that building up of your mind and building up of empowerment to move down here, to this region down here,” he said, indicating his groin. “Get this under control.”
“See, because this region right here, that’s the only region on your body that can make life and take life,” he went on. “If there’s anything we need to be telling our young people, it’s they need to be responsible with their reproductive systems. That means you don’t lay down and act like you’re making a baby til you’re ready to have a baby.”
Robinson became more explicit in his condemnation of birth control and sex education. “All this giving out of birth control and advising people how,” he said. “Here’s how you don’t have a baby: You don’t have what you do to make a baby until you’re ready to have that baby.”
Confusingly, Robinson argues that women should control their bodies but do so without sex education, access to contraceptives, and government protections for bodily autonomy. But then again, the confusion is likely the point.
In addition to blatantly sexist comments, Robinson has repeatedly attacked the LGBTQ+ community. Earlier this year, he referred to “transgenderism” and homosexuality as “filth” and said that trans people wanting to use a public restroom should “find a corner outside.” He has also called the Holocaust “hogwash.”
In the upcoming governor’s race, Robinson is currently trailing his opposition, Democrat Josh Stein, by a two digit margin in the polls.
