Hannah Einbinder and Gillian Anderson are set to star in I Saw the TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun’s new take on the classic slasher genre, the upcoming Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma.
While not much about the film has been revealed as of yet, the plot will follow a director preparing a reboot to a slasher film franchise called Camp Miasma set in, you guessed it, a summer camp. The director becomes obsessed with the reclusive actress who played the “final girl” in the original film, with the synopsis tagline reading “a whole new kind of slasher emerges from the bottom of the lake.”

“I make movies I wish existed when I was a kid, and Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is my best attempt at the ‘sleepover classic:’ an insane yet cozy midnight odyssey that beckons to unsuspecting viewers from the horror section at the local video store,” Schoenbrun said in a statement. “I couldn’t be more excited to be heading to sleepaway camp with the mad comic genius Hannah Einbinder, the legendary Gillian Anderson, and the daring folks at MUBI and Plan B, who by greenlighting this movie have summoned a plague-like flood of blood, guts, and various other fluids to rain down on us all.”

It’s safe to say that I am hooked.
For those unaware, Jane Schoenbrun wrote and directed what is arguably the most influential trans allegory film of this generation. Any trans person will tell you, I Saw The TV Glow is an emotional rollercoaster that speaks to us on a personal level. It is a film that plays on the internalized turmoil and anxiety of being trans but repressing it out of fear of not being understood. Schoenbrun’s first feature, We’re All Going to the World’s Fair, also exists in a liminal horror space, so Camp Miasma is likely to similarly lean into psychological horror in the slasher genre.
You also have Hannah Einbinder, who is iconic for attending an HRC event in that oversized suit, along with her hilarious performance opposite Jean Smart in Hacks.
For those who are younger, you may recognize Gillian Anderson from Crowns or Sex Education, but if you’re an oldhead with a niche interest in VHS tapes and CRTs, you may recognize her as Dana Scully from The X-Files. It is a very spooky television series from the 90s. I generally recommend seasons 1-4 if you want to get into the series.
Schoenbrun has cited The X-Files as a formative inspiration for their work. And tbf 90s television was pretty queer! David Duchovny who plays Fox Mulder on The X-Files, also plays a transwoman in Twin Peaks.
