Okay people, it’s time to address the Fletcher situation. What is the Fletcher situation, you may be asking? Let’s get into it.
RelatedLet’s break it down
Recently, the sapphic singer dropped a new single, entitled “Boy.” There’s nothing controversial about this at first glance—bisexuality exists and that’s great! The problem folks are having with the single rollout—and the lead-up to Fletcher’s new album dropping in July—is that there seems to be something else going on behind the scenes…
Culture, unfiltered
Our newsletter will bring you the pulse of queer culture, from the tastemakers to the groundbreakers.
“I’m not mad that Fletcher’s dating a man,” stated TikToker @livigoldi. “I actually don’t care who she’s dating…that’s literally the pinnacle of being in the queer community is accepting and validating consenting adults dating. What I am mad about is the way she went about it.”
She goes on to explain that as someone who’s been told her whole life that dating a man will lead to more acceptance and validation, she’s not thrilled with Fletcher’s framing of this new narrative of “being honest” about who she really is, coupled with what appears to be an image rebranding.
It comes at an interesting political moment—in this anti-trans, broadly anti-queer climate, we’re seeing many creators go back into the closet and justifying it in similar terms. See the Jadon scandal from last month.
So you can see why folks aren’t really feeling this new rollout.
“Upon this announcement…suddenly that queer edgy style is nowhere to be found,” said TikToker Zoe, “and instead this ‘I finally found myself’ vibe with running through the field in long feminine dresses and dating a man is….it’s weird.”
Agreed—it’s a weird pivot! Even King Princess had something to say about it…
Also girl…let’s not forget that it’s Pride Month! Quite the time for a rebranding of this kind. Which brings us to the inevitable cult accusations…
TikToker Alexis Rose made a video about The Modern Mystery School, a “conservative Christian cult” that Fletcher allegedly attended seminars in before all this went down. Rose refers to it as a “Wish dot com version of Scientology” and…yeah.
“It feels very trad-wifey,” Rose explains. And…yes. Yes it does. So what’s this cult all about, and what’s Fletcher’s relationship to them?
According to Alexis Rose, “their stated goal is world peace by way of ascension through human consciousness.” Vague, but okay.
There seems to be a tier-based system that Rose flags as being similar to Scientology. A 2021 Vice article also features past members calling it a “spiritual pyramid scheme,” as well as outlining some pretty damning stuff.
Rose also found that there’s a lot of discussion around “traditional gender roles” and even separate seminars for men and women. Which…red flag.
In all, this is not looking good. Fletcher, you’re in danger, girl.
