“Down Low” ushers in October with demon twink energy

A new comedy film gives a recently out gay man a deadly night to remember, but it all begins with a happy ending. Out now on digital, Down Low stars Lukas Gage and Zachary Quinto in whirlwind romp. Although a zany gay comedy might seem out of place for the spooky month, this horny film boasts its fair share of stiffs.

Quinto plays Gary, a recently divorced father who has just come out. Gage plays Cameron, a masseuse Gary hires who gives him his first gay sexual experience. After realizing just how virginal (and terminally ill) Gary is, Cameron makes it his mission to give him much more than a handjob—in a word, the night of his life. That plan ends up going a little too well…

After teaching Gary how to use the hookup app Plungr, Cameron invites another DL guy over for some fun. But a bit of clumsiness lands the pair with their first dead body of the evening. “It’s your first night being gay,” Cameron says in the trailer. “Did you really think you weren’t going to make any mistakes?”

The pair seek help on the dark web, and they wind up with ‘Fleshpuppet,’ a body-disposal expert played by Simon Rex. At some point, their efforts are nearly thwarted by Gary’s church-lady neighbor, played by Judith Light, who arrives to deliver the immortal line: “Church girls know how to kneel.”

All of that is packed into the roughly two-minute trailer, so we can expect even more outrageous antics in the full release. “I’m really glad I met you,” Gary tells Cameron towards the end of the trailer. “Even if multiple people are dead because of it.”

Although Lukas Gage came out just a few months ago, he’s long been making a name for himself with queer shenanigans on screen. He famously played a twink on his own journey of sexual self-discovery in The White Lotus, but Down Low puts Gage in the driver’s seat.

In preparing for the role of Cameron, Gage told EW that he studied the demon twink. “I was really channeling that Demon Twink era. Cameron was inspired by the Demon Twink,” he said. “I just remember filming and [the Demon Twink] was happening at the same time. I was like, ‘This was meant to be. This is kismet. This is my homework.’ It was delivered to me.”

Down Low is available now to buy or rent on digital.
