Marjorie Taylor Greene issues dire warning about “sign from God” eclipse

Before such natural phenomena were fully understood, humans in ancient times often ascribed religious meaning to such things as earthquakes or eclipses. You don’t expect a similar viewpoint from a serving US congress member. That’s probably why a tweet from George Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene went viral over the weekend.

Greene, one of the most notoriously anti-queer lawmakers in DC, posted on Friday, “God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens. 🙏”

Her tweet came in the wake of an earthquake in New Jersey. A full solar eclipse will sweep across several US states today.

Greene’s tweet prompted over 21k replies and a community note of clarification. It observed, “Monday’s eclipse was predicted hundreds of years ago, it will not have been caused by contemporary actions.”

Online, many were scathing.

Greene was not the only one to read nefarious meaning into today’s eclipse. Her reported boyfriend, TV producer Brian Glenn, wondered as to the “fallout” from this “very rare” eclipse and spoke of a plague of locusts on the way.

The “plague” he’s talking about is probably just another natural world phenomenon. A “double brood” of cicadas is expected to hatch this year, with 13-year-cycle and 17-year-cycle cicadas in sync in 2024 (the first time since 1803).

Greene doubles down

Greene seemed undaunted by the mass mockery she faced with her eclipse warning. Perhaps this is unsurprising given she has previously proudly stated that she doesn’t believe in evolution and says teaching kids about homosexuality in schools is a form of “child abuse“. Yesterday, she doubled down on her “repent” warning with another posting.

“Many have mocked and scoffed at this post and even put community notes. Jesus talked about that in Luke 12:54-56.

“Yes eclipses are predictable and earthquakes happen and we know when comets are passing by, however God created all of these things and uses them to be signs for those of us who believe.”

It prompted another wave of mockery.

Garage workout

Oh, and Greene also posted another of her bizarre home workout videos. This one appeared to have a ghostly haze applied to it.

Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger was among those to comment.

Should you be lucky enough to be in the path of the solar eclipse, enjoy the spectacle, and don’t forget to wear the appropriate eyewear!
