JK Rowling’s anti-asexual posting has us all scratching our heads

On April 6, infamous TERF JK Rowling celebrated International Asexuality Day. Well, “celebrated” may be generous — but she certainly acknowledged it with a series of inflammatory posts.

On social media, Rowling posted an infographic eloquently explaining asexuality, defining it as experiencing “little to no sexual attraction” and pointing out that ace folks can still experience romantic relationships. Despite sharing the info herself, Rowling apparently couldn’t get the sexuality through her head. In her caption, she wrote, “Happy International Fake Oppression Day to everyone who wants complete strangers to know they don’t fancy a shag.”

Rowling doubled down in her replies, claiming that asexual people are merely “straight people who don’t fancy a quickie.” When others pointed out that asexual people can also be gay, bi, or experience any variety of romantic attraction, Rowling asked, “How are you supposed to tell which you are if you don’t experience sexual attraction?”

The internet was quick to point out the obvious: romantic attraction can exist without sex, a concept that Rowling — an author of children’s books that feature plenty of romance without anything X-rated — should be well aware of.

Others wondered why Rowling takes issue with asexual folks in the first place. Has her hatred for trans folks spiraled, leading her to reject anything outside of the cis, hetero norm? “Beefing with asexuals has to be the most forced sh*t in the world because they don’t even do anything,” one user wrote.

Maybe it’s another side effect of the black mold (allegedly) taking over Rowling’s mind.

Regardless, asexual people will continue to exist — and to have an awareness day — whether Rowling likes it or not. Happy belated International Asexuality Day to all!
