Somehow, Karla Sofía Gascón’s chaotic Oscars experience was even wilder than we thought.
The actress has become an extremely divisive figure, first for starring in Emilia Pérez — a film that, despite being about a trans Mexican woman, has been much maligned by trans folks and Mexican people alike — and then for a series of resurfaced social media posts filled with racist and Islamophobic language.
Nevertheless, Gascón was nominated for Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Oscars. The world wondered if she’d show face at the ceremony, and indeed she did, despite skipping the red carpet. According to Gascón, though, the controversy around her appearance was only the tip of the iceberg.

On Tuesday, Gascón shared a story on Instagram with the caveat that “it’s important to laugh at ourselves.” Apparently, she received a gift bag in honor of her nomination, including a bag of chips and a soda, both of which she consumed.
“Suddenly I start to feel dizzy and I think it is tiredness, I go to bed, but I notice that the intensity rises and I start to worry, I call a friend to tell him to be alert in case something happens to me,” Gascón wrote. “The situation does not improve and I start to take some candy because my blood pressure drops and I have a strange feeling. I move as I can and say ‘Let’s see if something I have eaten has made me sick, I check the composition of the bag of chips — nothing.”
The soda, on the other hand, apparently contained THC, meaning Gascón accidentally got incredibly high.
“I laugh now even though I still have vertigo, but I did get scared,” she continued. “Good thing my daughter didn’t take it to school. Anyway, the rest of the gifts very nice, thank you.”
It’s unclear if Gascón drank the THC-infused soda before or after the ceremony — but the internet is running with the idea that she was actually high for the Oscars themselves. It would explain some of her strange behavior, like the prayer-hands bow she gave in response to host Conan O’Brien’s bold jokes about her.

“Anora uses the F-word 479 times. That’s more than the record set by Karla Sofía Gascón’s publicist,” O’Brien said at the ceremony.
“Karla, if you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel,” he added.
Gascón responded to O’Brien’s jokes in an Instagram post following the ceremony. “Thanks to the members of the Academy for the best actress nomination, for the invitation to the ceremony,” she wrote in Spanish, as translated by The Hollywood Reporter. “I enjoyed it very much, it was entertaining and fun, especially the fabulous host Jimmy Kimmel — he is fantastic and looks more like the great Conan O’Brien every day.”
