Luca Guadagnino’s newest movie Queer is many things: Romantic. Erotic. Tragic. Very, very gay. One thing it isn’t, though, is a horror movie — despite what one audience member’s review on TikTok would have you think.
After seeing the movie, TikTok user Ashley Ladner took to the app to warn other moviegoers what they might be getting into: “I’m genuinely so scared, went for drew starkey,” she wrote, along with a video she’d taken in the theater. “Just be prepared.”
Ladner doubled down on her message in the video’s caption. “Like what am i watching, love u tho drew,” she wrote. “this was scary.”

The video quickly went viral across social media, with people wondering what exactly Ladner could have found so frightening. Was it the film’s gay content, which is a far cry from Drew Starkey’s other projects like Outer Banks? (Then again, seeing queerness on-screen ought to be a given for a movie literally called Queer.)

Or was it the film’s surreal third act that caught Ladner off-guard? Either way, the gay internet wasn’t having it.

“People’s sexuality, or whatever they desire, is as individual as a fingerprint,” the “Queer” star said in a new interview.
Ladner took to TikTok once again to defend herself in a follow-up video. “So it looks like you guys aren’t happy that I didn’t enjoy the movie. Sue me,” she said. “Sue me, that I went and saw a movie because I like the actor. I didn’t know I needed to do my research, I needed to be a lover of film, to purchase a movie theater ticket.”
“Don’t get me wrong, I can appreciate the cinematic, the beautiful-ness, the message behind the movie, okay? Like, I get it. I’m not that dumb, okay?” Ladner continued. “But it was so boring. And like, you’re allowed to think it’s not boring. You guys are coming for me, saying I’m some normie that means nothing, doesn’t get it. Like, I got it — I looked it up. But thank you for the free clout!”
And in return for her free clout, Ladner got the movie some free clout, too. Queer is in theaters everywhere now. Check out the trailer below.
