It’s an age-old debate: who should be allowed in gay bars? Ought they belong to gay men alone, the entire queer community, or whoever simply wants to go out on the town, regardless of gender and sexuality? One social media user made their stance crystal clear, igniting a whole new side to the discourse.
X user Simon Szuharev (@realsimonsz) took to the internet to complain about who he seems to see as the problem with gay nightlife these days: women.
“I think gay bars should go back to playing p*rn to scare the women away. I am always amazed by the fact that women, primarily straight, outnumber men at gay bars,” he wrote in a viral post. “Like, girl, you have all the straight bars to you. Hoe there.”

Beyond Szuharev’s thinly veiled misogyny (who are we kidding; it’s not veiled at all), there are a number of problems with his logic. For one, not all women are straight or cis, especially those who go to gay bars — and several folks on social media pointed out that men’s gaydar for lesbians isn’t nearly as sharp as they might think.
If people like Szuharev would prefer that genders stay segregated and queer women simply go to lesbian bars instead, bad news: they essentially don’t exist. There are only 33 lesbian bars left in the entire United States, so of course queer people of all genders and sexualities are going to flock to whatever queer safe spaces are available.
RelatedGay bars are meant to be a cornerstone of gay culture. So why do they feel so lonely?“You can’t suck d*ck with the cap facing forward.”
Then there’s the fact that women — gay, straight, or otherwise — aren’t likely to be scared off by a little gay porn. Plenty of women are into that, either for erotic reasons or just a little casual entertainment.

Long story short, if you’re aiming to drive women away from gay bars, you’ll have to try a lot harder than that.
