Brat summer isn’t so much a season as it is an idea. A feeling. A movement. There’s only one person who could truly declare it over: Charli xcx herself, whose smash album BRAT inspired the theme of the summer. Unfortunately for brats everywhere, she’s just sounded the death knell in a viral post on X.

On September 2, Charli posted, “​​goodbye forever brat summer.” It’s a cut-and-dried statement: with August over, brat summer is over too.

With that, brats across the internet went through the five stages of grief. Some met Charli’s announcement with mournful acceptance, sharing BRAT-ified sad scenes from media like Titanic and How to Get Away with Murder.

Others begged Charli to take back her statement, pointing to the fact that though summer may be ending in the global north, it’s only just beginning in the Southern Hemisphere. Think of the Australians, Charli!

Then there are those who are happy to move on to the next logical stage of the brat calendar: brat autumn. It’s time to stop bumpin’ that and start pumpkin’ that.

It’s not the first time brat autumn has been mentioned by Charli’s fanbase. Last week, Charli herself confirmed it means embracing the album’s more serious themes, as opposed to its party girl energy.

Charli, for her part, has plenty to look forward to, even after brat summer. She’s about to set out on the Sweat Tour with Troye Sivan, which she teased with a shot of her and Sivan in matching tank tops reading “ABOUT F*CKING TIME!” Truer words have rarely been spoken.
