Here’s why “I hate gay Halloween” memes have taken over social media

It’s just a couple of days until October 31 but social media has been flooded with memes from people saying they “hate gay Halloween”.

The lighthearted memes illustrate the fact that not only do gay folk love spooky season but that they often make some obscure costume choices: pop culture references often only understood by other queer folk.

The gays are rarely satisfied with something off-the-rack at Spirit Halloween!

This is not the first year the ‘I hate gay Halloween” meme has appeared. Remember classics such as this from 2023?

In fact, it may have been a tweet from 2022 that kick-started the whole idea, suggesting: “Gay Halloween costumes are like ‘oh this? I’m the scarf Mira Sorvino folded at the end of Romy and Michelle.’”

However, 2024 seems to have turbo-charged the trend. Here are some of the posts that have gained traction in recent days.
