Here’s how a pet-sitting app might double as a gay dating service

On the app Rover, users can offer their services as a pet sitter or dog walker, or find someone to take care of their own furry friend while they’re away. But according to a viral TikTok, the app has another unintended usage that’s music to the gays’ ears.

The video, posted by TikTok user Sean Bates (@batessean), has over 43,000 likes. “I’ve been dog-sitting on Rover to help me afford moving abroad, and something unexpected happened,” Bates began. “This dude hit me up, and he was like, ‘Hey, I need you to watch my dog,’ and I was like, ‘Okay, no problem, for sure.’”

That’s when things took a turn: “This tall beautiful man walks out during the dog introduction,” Bates continued. He and the man exchanged “very professional” hellos, he said, before going over some info about his dog.

“He asked me for my number — not weird, because I’m taking care of his dog — and then we start texting not like I’m taking care of your dog,” Bates said with a smirk.

“Is Rover the new dating app? Because like, I’m kinda down with that!” he added. “This is not a common experience, but like, I’m not upset at it whatsoever. Like, this beautiful, handsome man just hit on me ‘cause I’m babysitting his dog, and I was like, ‘I’m okay with this!’”

Folks in Bates’ comments section were rooting for their Rover-inspired romance. “ohhh show him who’s a good boy,” reads the video’s most-liked comment.

“He needs a stay at home boyfriend who will take care of his pup,” theorized another commenter.

Other users shared their own non-pet-related experiences with app. “Me watching this after hooking up with the guy I dogsat for this week👁️👄👁️,” one commenter wrote.

“I can def attest to the quality of the men on rover. 10/10,” shared another.

But for anyone invested in Bates’ would-be love story, it has a bittersweet ending.

“We have been texting, and we’re talking about hanging out once he gets back from his trip, because that sounds like fun,” Bates said in a follow-up video. “Although I have to be honest, I’m sorry — I already told him that I’m just looking for a friend, even though he’s handsome, because I am planning on moving abroad.”

“I know a couple of you were like, ‘Aw, he’s gonna cuff you! He’s gonna make you want to stay!’ I have reasons why I want to go for myself, and my dad said if I have a burning in my heart that needs to be fulfilled, that nothing else will fill it,” he added. “But I am gonna go hang out with him because he seems like a darling.”
