“Smell commentator” Ally Louks confirms she’s bi and breaks the internet

Ally Louks has a talent for going viral.

Last fall, Louks went viral for her PhD, titled “Olfactory Ethics: The Politics of Smell in Modern and Contemporary Prose.” While haters attacked Louks for no apparent reason other than being a woman in academia, she found an audience along the way, now frequently going viral while also teaching at Cambridge University (and proving the value of her research with piping hot takes on the politics of smell).

Louks also got plenty of sapphic attention, with gays across the internet hoping she was open to the ladies. There’s a rainbow flag in her bio, but folks weren’t sure if it was a message of solidarity with LGBTQ+ folks or a sign she queer herself. “I hope that rainbow flag in your bio means what I think it means girl,” one user wrote.

That’s when Louks answered the question on everyone’s minds: “I may be called Ally but that’s not why the flag is in my bio 👀,” she wrote in a post that’s since garnered more than 7 million views.

In Louks’ replies, one man lamented that her post apparently meant he’d never have a chance with her. “half of twitter is crushed…” he wrote.

To that, Louks replied, “Not the bisexual erasure 🥲,” confirming to the world that 2025 has brought yet another bi-con into the spotlight.

Naturally, queer folks across the internet celebrated Louks being part of the LGBTQ+ community, comparing her to fellow bi stars in current pop culture like Doechii and Devon from Severance.

In a later post, Louks confirmed that this is far from her first time coming out of the closet. “Coming out as queer for the second time well over a decade later was not on my 2025 bingo card but here we are,” she wrote. What iconic post will looks cook up next? We’ll just have to wait and see.
