Just because you and a stranger both identify as queer doesn’t automatically mean you’re going to get along. After all, LGBTQ+ folks aren’t a monolith — and one TikToker has a system for separating the potential friends from the queer people that
TikToker and podcast host Rosie Alejandrino shared the “Rebecca Black queerness test,” as she called it in the caption, with the internet in a video that’s garnered more than 140,000 views.
“If I meet another queer person for the first time and I’m trying to gauge if we’re gonna get along or not, I simply ask them: ‘What are your opinions on Rebecca Black?’” Alejandrino began.
“If I say the name Rebecca Black, and your brain goes, ‘That’s mother. Queen of the redemption arc. I love Dorian Electra. Saw her DJ a futch party. That is my hyperpop queen,’ we’re gonna get along,” she continued. “But if I say the name Rebecca Black, and you go, ‘The girl from the “Friday” video?’ What’s she been up to?’, do not interact.”

For those who’d fall into Alejandrino’s second category, Black has, indeed, far surpassed the poor reputation of her infamous “Friday” music video. Her new album SALVATION, featuring hyperpop hits like “Sugar Water Cyanide” and “TRUST!”, is tailor-made for the gay club. She even noted on Thursday that every song from the album was now out-streaming “Friday” on Spotify.
Several folks in Alejandrino’s comments section agreed with her assessment, saying if you’re not down with Black, your character is questionable.
“One of the reasons why I started doing drag was to force people to listen to her new music as I perform it,” one commenter wrote.
“It’s insane how she went through that whole Friday fiasco, stayed in music, and is now releasing such bangers,” another fan commented. “what choice do we have but to stan.”
RelatedElvira decided to make a whole event around donating her now disgraced automobile.“There is a cultural reckoning unfolding before us,” influencer Noah Miller said in a TikTok with 2.9 million views.
But others found Alejandrino’s test a bit reductive. Does your preferred music genre really define how good of a friend you’d be?
“I’m sorry but I’m an angry gay folk kinda queer person,” one commenter wrote. “I’m happy to know hyperpop exists but it doesnt do anything for me 🥲🥲🥲”
“im the wrong type of gay entirely,” another commenter shared. “you say Rebecca Black i think of Rebecca Sugar.” Indeed, Steven Universe gays may fall outside either of Alejandrino’s categories — and strict binaries have never mixed well with queer community.
Maybe at the end of the day, whether or not you’re a fan of Black’s music, we can all agree she deserved better than the media firestorm that was “Friday.” One commenter recalled just that: “Did I look into what Rebecca black was up to? Yeah. Did it speak to me? No. Do I remember most of it? No. Does she deserve love? Hell yeah. The world did her dirty with Friday.”
