The tale of the Wicked poppers proves the start of a very gay trend

Since hitting theaters last Friday, movie musical Wicked has quickly become the biggest film in the world — and according to a viral story on Reddit, one audience member found an… unconventional way to enjoy all that Wicked has to offer.

“I went to see Wicked today in theaters,” the user recalled in their post. “A few minutes into the movie, I noticed the man in front of me moving his head around a LOT. It was like what someone would do if their neck hurt or they were warming up. He did it for a few minutes and it was so distracting.”

“About 10 minutes later he starts doing it again. At this point I was thinking he might have a [tic], which is unavoidable and totally fine,” they continued. “While I’m thinking that I start smelling poppers of all things. This. Man. Was. Doing. Poppers.”

“I finally put it all together and realized he was sniffing poppers at the start of every musical number and then bobbing his head around while he felt the rush,” they concluded.

Commenters wondered how the poppers might have helped him enjoy the movie’s various songs. “At the [end] of Defying Gravity that was his butthole actually singing the ‘AHHHAHAHAHAAAAAA’ part of the song,” one user mused.

“He knowsss about ‘popper-ular,’” offered another.

Others lamented that the poppers-popping Wicked-goer is mixing movies and drugs that don’t go together. “Lol that’s so déclassé,” carped one commenter. “Save the poppers for the Sweat Tour and just eat a weed gummy before the movie LIKE AN ADULT!”

But beyond the Wicked poppers themselves, the story proves there’s a troubling (or exciting?) trend for the gayest drug there is: poppers aren’t just for the club anymore.

Apparently, there’s a poppers epidemic in the world of musical theater these days, be it on stage or on screen. Earlier this month, the crowd at New York City Center’s production of Ragtime was a victim of public poppers use, too, with one audience member reporting an apparent spill to social media. New York City Center itself acknowledged the incident with a single emoji: “🥂.”

Where will poppers strike next? Our money’s on Broadway’s Romeo + Juliet — it would match the queer-adjacent, Gen Z vibes — but it seems that no theater (or movie theater) is safe.
