Netflix’s Devil May Cry title sequence dropped and I’m hyped

This week Netflix dropped the title sequence for the upcoming Devil May Cry anime adaptation set to release this April. The Adi Shankar-created Netflix series is set to be an exciting take on the Capcom franchise, with the opening credits capturing that 2000s punk aesthetic.

What threw fans for a loop was having the opening theme for the anime be the song Rollin’ by Limp Bizkit. It’s probably the most 2000s sound in the world, transporting viewers into an era of early YouTube,  AMVs, and flame button-down shirts.

The series will follow Dante, a demon hunter who runs a demon-slaying business called Devil May Cry. If it sounds rather cliché and campy that’s because it is—if you love the Evil Dead you’ll love this series. However, fans may be disappointed upon learning that Reuben Langdon, Dante’s original voice actor in Devil May Cry-related media, will not be reprising his role in this series.

What comes as even more of a shock to fans is that Johnny Yong Bosch is set to voice Dante in the anime. Fans know Bosch as the voice actor for Nero, one of the game series’ protagonists who made his debut in Devil May Cry 4 . Nero returned to the series’ most recent installment, Devil May Cry 5.

One part of the opening that stood out in the trailed is the very first shot, which shows a field of swords sticking from the ground. These are all swords from previous games, with the one appearing in the center foreground being Rebellion, Dante’s main weapon. I could probably talk about every sword in that one shot but for the sake of brevity, I’ll just go over the ones that are of note. In this shot, the colors begin to shift to blue while a glitchy transition replaces Rebellion with a katana. This is sure to pique fan interest because In the Devil May Cry series, Dante has a twin brother named Virgil who is a major antagonistic force throughout. Unlike Dante, Virgil sports a blue coat and uses a katana as his main weapon. This part in the intro has led fans to speculate that Virgil may appear in the series.

Another detail is the sword to the left of Rebellion being Red Queen, Nero’s main weapon. While it is not known if Nero will appear in the series, it seems very unlikely, as the show is supposed to be an adaptation of the events around the 3rd installment. It’s more likely it was added along with the others to fit in as many references as they could. We also see other characters from the series in this intro such as Lady (yes, that’s actually what she’s called) and the final boss of the first Devil May Cry game, Mundus. The anime is set to release on April 3rd of this year.

As someone who spent an entire summer playing Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening to the point of being able to S rank every mission in under 3 hours from muscle memory alone, to say that I’m hyped is the biggest understatement of the year.
