A queer comic is getting the video game adaptation treatment from the Silent Hill 2 developers later this year. And if the recent trailer’s anything to go by, we’re in for a cell-shaded nightmare that is equal parts gorgeous and terrifying.
During the Future Games Show, Polish developer Bloober Team (Silent Hill 2 remake, Blair Witch) unveiled the first game under their new horror label Broken Mirror Games. Titled I Hate This Place, the game is an adaptation of the 2022 comic series of the same name.

The original comic followed Gabby and Trudy, a lesbian couple who inherit a mysterious and not-at-all spooky ranch. It turns out this abandoned farmhouse in the middle of nowhere is more than a simple fixer-upper. The Place—as it comes to be known—attracts just about every occult creature and paranormal happening you can imagine, from demons to aliens and beyond. In other words, peak camp.

True to its source material, the upcoming game features throwback comic book visuals, complete with cell-shaded animation, action lines and onomatopoeic bangs and thuds accompanying sound effects.
In terms of gameplay, I Hate This Place bills itself as an isometric open world survival horror game featuring day/night cycles, crafting with limited supplies, gun/melee combat and stealth. Players will explore the grounds by day to solve individual hauntings and uncover the big mystery behind the Place. Just don’t get caught out in the open by nightfall…
From the sound of the description, our lesbian heroines will not be the focus of the story. Instead, the game features a new scream queen in a stand-alone story set in the same universe. It’s unclear at what point in the timeline this new story takes place, so there’s hope yet that Gabby and Trudy will make some kind of appearance.
“Playing as Elena, you awaken forces that threaten to shatter everything you knew about reality,” the game’s official description reads.
“I Hate This Place features bold, vivid colors and unsettling environments, all wrapped up in a gloriously retro ’80s aesthetic with just a hint of camp to lighten the mood,” the synopsis adds.
“Each location is lovingly crafted to tell its own disturbing story through stylish visuals that blur the line between reality and nightmare.”
I Hate This Place is currently slated for late 2025 (hopefully in time for Halloween) and it will launch on PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch and PC.
