Turn It Up

New Gay Music: Lil Nas X, Kylie Minogue, and Billy Porter

During the winter, music is the thing to get us through the grinding depression of gray days and dark nights. But once the weather starts to turn, music begins to serve a different function. I don’t know about you, but when the hot weather hits, there’s nothing I want to be doing more than laying outside in the sun listening to the music that’s destined to compose the queer summer soundtrack. This Friday brings us many new contenders.

Lil Nas X blessed us with a beautiful new single about fighting internalized gay shame:

The lyrics “Since ten I been feelin’ lonely/Had friends but they was pickin’ on me” are poignant, painful, and familiar to anyone who had to grow up closeted. The track makes us even prouder of how Nas has been able to overcome the shame drilled into him by a religious upbringing to give us world-shaking songs like “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” and “Old Town Road.”

As reported earlier this week, we got a “Starstruck” Remix with both Olly Alexander and Kylie Minogue showing out:

It’s just as gay as you might have imagined– possibly even gayer.

We also got word that Billy Porter is following up his busy week with some additional musical activism. A new HIV/AIDS Benefit Album, “Red Hot + Free,” will feature several stars remixing dance hits from the 70s and 80s. The “Pose” star will be covering the classic Juliet Roberts club favorite, “Caught in the Middle” for the album, slated to release on July 2nd.

We can see Porter knocking it straight out of the park with this bop.

And finally, some news to get excited about: queer artist Phoebe Bridgers has signed pop group MUNA to her label Saddest Factory Records. Just don’t call them a girl group!

This collaboration is certain to produce queer gold if this in-office pic is any indication:
