Through accusations of black mold-induced psychosis and being sued by an Olympian, JK Rowling has stood firm in her anti-trans beliefs, spamming the internet countless with countless posts on the topic. A known transphobe being transphobic is one thing — but one of entertainment’s most prestigious media companies standing by her is entirely another.
In a new article published today, Variety dove into the effect Rowling’s transphobia could have on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series being produced at HBO (which it was recently confirmed she’d be very involved in). The article includes a new statement from an HBO representative. Its message is straightforward and disappointing to queer fans of the series: The network is fine with Rowling being as transphobic as she likes.
“We are proud to once again tell the story of Harry Potter — the heartwarming books that speak to power of friendship, resolve and acceptance,” the HBO representative said in the statement. “J.K. Rowling has a right to express her personal views. We will remain focused on the development of the new series, which will only benefit from her involvement.”

The statement itself is bad enough, but its timing is so poor its almost comical. The article containing the statement came out on November 20 — aka, Transgender Day of Remembrance. While the timing is no doubt coincidental (read: ignorant), it’s a sad reflection of how little Rowling and HBO seem to care about how their words and actions can impact trans people.
Folks across social media chided HBO for the statement and choice to keep Rowling on board for the series. “celebrate trans day of remembrance by cancelling your hbo subscription,” recommended one post.
