Megyn Kelly says “obese lesbians” are part of LA’s wildfire crisis in bizarre rant

Megyn Kelly’s never been known for giving good takes, but her latest complaint might take the cake for absurdity.

On a recent episode of The Megyn Kelly Show, the conservative media personality sounded off on the wildfires in Los Angeles. A big part of the environmental crisis, to hear Kelly tell it, is that LA’s fire department has queer women at the top.

Specifically, Kelly called Fire Chief Kristin Crowley, Deputy Chief Kristine Larson, and Chief Jaime Brown. “These three women who are at the top there are all — I mean, honestly, I’m not trying to be mean, but they’re, they’re obese,” Kelly said. “These are overweight, out of shape women.”

“The last thing I want to see if I am in a burning building is A, a woman, and B, an obese woman,” she went on. “Who takes comfort? ‘I’m going to die, but it’s in the presence of an obese lesbian‘. This is ridiculous.”

Seemingly pretending her views are popular, Kelly concluded by saying, “I speak for all women. I believe I speak for all females in Los Angeles when I say we want a strong man to rescue us. That’s what we want. Do we ask for too much?”

Fatphobia, lesbophobia, and misogyny all in one? Kelly’s truly giving a masterclass in bigotry.

Kelly isn’t the first person to inexplicably bring queer folks up in regard to the fires. Last week, 2 Broke Girls creator Whitney Cummings made a poorly-timed joke about lesbians leading LA’s fire department: “I love a lesbo but LA fire is run by THREE lesbians? Are you allowed to just only recruit people in your dating pool?” she said on social media. Cummings’ intention may have been comedy, but it came off nearly as offensive as Kelly’s more overt lesbophobia.

And outside the world of celebrities (and we’re using that term generously), everyday LA citizens have somehow put the blame on queer people, too. During a live news segment last week, a random man told a reporter that he thinks “all the gay people in LA” are the reason for the fires.

Why is an environmental crisis getting pinned on the gays? Who’s to say — but anyone using the fires as an excuse to spout bigotry should recognize that the world has bigger problems than queer people getting good jobs.
