Time flies! It’s been three years since JoJo Siwa came out. She chose to commemorate the moment with a posting on Instagram. She included several photos from the past three years of her living her best, queer life.
In the accompanying caption, she reflected on her journey.
“3 years ago I made the best decision of my life. People always ask me ‘was coming out scary for you?’ My answer is Absolutely… not only because of the typical fears of judgment when coming out but also coming out while being a ‘child star’ is something that no one had done. This was now a massive part of me that I didn’t wanna hide.

“People told me not to come out, Big, Fancy, Important people… So when I did, it shattered some things. However I never cared how it affected anything negatively because I knew anything I lost because I was now out, proud and happy wasn’t something I wanted to be a part of and wasn’t meant for me.
“I’m so grateful to the people who have supported me no matter what, and wanna send love to EVERYONE in the world today. And everyday.
“Feels like yesterday but at the same time feels like 20 years ago. Happy 3 year gayiversary❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
Childhood fame and coming out
Siwa, 20, was born in Nebraska. She first found fame by appearing on Abby’s Ultimate Dance Competition and then two seasons of Dance Moms between 2014-2016.
She then launched a pop career and a hugely successful YouTube channel.
In January 2021, aged 17, she came out as being part of the LGBTQ+ community. She initially resisted labels but said pansexual might be the best description for her. She later clarified that she was not attracted to men and started using ‘gay’ and ‘queer’ when talking about her sexuality.
Since coming out, she has appeared as a contestant and judge on several reality shows and competitions, including Dancing With The Stars, RuPaul’s Drag Race, So You Think You Can Dance, and Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test.
